Warning Signs

WHEN REPLACEMENT IS THE RIGHT CALL

Continuing to patch a failing driveway costs more in the long run than replacing it. If you recognize these signs, a full replacement will save you money over the next decade.

  • Multiple large potholes that keep coming back
  • Significant frost heave or base failure
  • Alligator cracking across most of the surface
  • Driveway is 20+ years old
  • Soft spots that sink under vehicle weight
  • Drainage problems causing water to pool

THE BASE IS EVERYTHING

Most driveway failures start below the surface. Poor drainage, inadequate base depth, or unstable soil causes the asphalt above to crack, heave, and sink — no matter how thick the asphalt layer is.

Sam & Sons builds every replacement driveway on a properly graded and compacted crushed stone base. This is the step many contractors rush or skip — it's why our driveways last 20–25 years while others fail in 5–10.

Our Process

HOW WE DO IT

01

Free Assessment

We inspect your existing driveway and assess whether full replacement or overlay is the right solution. We'll give you an honest recommendation and free estimate.

02

Old Asphalt Removal

We break up and remove the old asphalt using excavation equipment. All debris is hauled away — your property is left clean.

03

Sub-Base Preparation

The soil beneath is graded, compacted, and built up with crushed stone base material — the most critical step for long-term performance.

04

New Asphalt Installation

Hot-mix asphalt is laid and compacted in lifts to the proper depth. Edges are finished clean and drainage is confirmed.

05

Final Inspection

We walk the job with you before we leave. Any concerns are addressed on the spot. Your new driveway is ready to use within 24–48 hours.

06

1-Year Warranty

All replacement work is backed by our standard 1-year workmanship warranty. We stand behind every job.

Common Questions

REPLACEMENT FAQ

How do I know if I need full replacement vs. overlay?

If your driveway has surface cracking and fading but the base is solid, overlay is usually sufficient. If you have deep potholes, significant heaving, soft spots, or the driveway is 20+ years old with widespread damage, full replacement is the better long-term investment. We assess every driveway for free and give you an honest recommendation.

How long does full driveway replacement take?

Most residential driveways are completed in 1–2 days. Larger driveways or those requiring significant sub-base work may take 2–3 days. We haul away all old material and clean up before we leave.

How long will my new driveway last?

A properly installed asphalt driveway lasts 20–25 years in upstate NY with regular sealcoating every 3–5 years. The key is proper base preparation — which is where many contractors cut corners.

What happens to the old asphalt?

We haul it away as part of the job. Old asphalt is typically recycled — it is one of the most recycled materials in the United States.

How soon can I use my new driveway?

You can walk on it immediately. Light vehicle traffic is typically fine after 24 hours. We recommend waiting 48–72 hours before parking heavy vehicles, and avoiding sharp turns in place for the first 2 weeks.
